After graduating with an Honours Degree in Fine Art Painting & Art History from Birmingham College of Art & Design in 1973, Richard Pottas devoted his life to education through art. In 2005 he gave up his position as Head of the Expressive Arts Faculty & Head of Art to concentrate on his studio in Whitby. Pottas’s work has been focussed on interpreting the natural world in all its many facets, both figuratively and non-figuratively. Climate and seasonal change features strongly in his work, as do repetitive surface patterns found in nature. The landscape of South-West France continues to inspire his work.
Most of my work is produced in the studio, based on memories of locations visited. I no longer work from sketches or photographs, enabling my work to be very personal, based on how I remember the moment rather than depicting it faithfully. The use of masking fluid is an integral component in the production of the works. ££££
